Who shouldn’t use this checklist?

Don't use my checklist if you:

Money's tight. Can I start a blog for free instead?

Yes, but I don't recommend it. Free blogs have limited income-making ability, lack of control, lack of support, only basic features, and if you want to switch later, it’s a hassle. Start off right.

I've tried many, many setups over the last two decades. This is the one I truly feel gives you the biggest bang for your buck when starting.

Is WordPress better than Wix, Squarespace, Blogger, etc.?

It depends on what you mean by “better” but overall? Yes. WordPress (self hosted, not WordPress.com) is by far the most popular type of blog and is used by big and small bloggers alike. It powers a large portion of the internet and dominates similar platforms like Squarespace, Wix and Blogger.

Are there any settings I need to configure before I write?

Personally, I like to set the permalink structure to "Post name" from the start. It's one setting that's more of a hassle to change later. Here's how to do it:

How do I write a new post?

WordPress Dashboard > Posts > Add New.

What makes a first blog post lame?

A lame blog post goes something like this: "Hi, welcome to my blog! This is my first blog post. I don't have anything to say really, but stay tuned..."

Don't do that. Instead, make every post you publish robust and helpful.

Why shouldn’t I worry about a theme (blog design) yet?

At the beginning, your time is much better spent writing content. Why? A few reasons.

So, publish at least 5-7 really meaty posts first. Pick a theme after that.

I'm ready to choose a theme. Any recommendations?

Yes. I like GeneratePress and Kadence. The creators of both are reputable and trustworthy. Both are customizable.

To install either, go to your WordPress Dashboard > Appearance > Add New Theme (button at the top). In the search bar at the top right, type in GeneratePress or Kadence. Both have free versions.

Once installed, there are countless ways to customize a theme. It's best to google at this point. Look for recent video tutorials on YouTube especially!

Blogging isn't for me. How do I get my money back?

Already started with Bluehost but want your money back? No worries! They have a 30-day money back guarantee. The only thing non-refundable is the cost of your domain name (if you chose one).

To cancel, simply call 888-401-4678 (US customers only). Or use the chat feature from your account.
